There was once a Man. Tall, Dark and Handsome. He got married to a beautiful woman, petite, willowy, with hair as black as the darkest of nights. They were ‘arranged’ to meet, designed to marry.
And marry they did. Because they wanted to. And stars conspired with the two to finally join them in matrimony. They had the usual relationship, the usual ups and the usual downs. It was the ‘regularity’ of their relationship that made theirs so ‘extraordinary’. The man was the life of the party. The woman, the anchor in the sea. The man always had a story to tell. The woman always had the time to listen. They constantly updated themselves to stay in tune with the times. And they took care to stay the same, to give comfort in the ever shifting times.
As time went by, jobs changed, careers grew, there were different cities and different houses, kids happened and the family tree began to sprout new leaves. Houses turned into homes and new traditions were born; annual vacations, festivals, all took on a new meaning.
This man and this woman somewhere along the line forgot their own identities. They poured so much of themselves into their family and each other, it was hard to seem them as anything else but as the ‘husband’, the ‘wife’, the ‘father’ or the ‘mother’. All their priorities shifted and they forgot to put themselves on the list. However, life was good to them. They were happy and had all that they ever needed. And even if the lows were low and highs not so high, they quite comfortably swam on against the tide. If he began to go under, she would pull him right up. And if she began to despair, he had the right joke.
Joke they did. He always made fun of her cooking. She always laughed the loudest. The years went on and the kids grew up. They had the usual relationship too, a too strict dad, a very gullible mom. Dad with his ridiculous curfews, mom with her million concerned questions. Dad a tyrant with all the male ‘friends’ and mom on a quest to be a best friend after being inspired by countless novels. Both so misguided.
For a while. And then the kids appreciated the bond. The closeness. The fact that they were just a phone call away. And finally they began to see ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ as a man, as a woman.
Me and my sister are lucky enough to call them ‘mom’ and ‘dad’. And we also appreciate just how much more they are, than just that!
Happy Anniversary!

The Martini Files
It was the Birthday weekend, so naturally it was spent being spoiled and having a general good time. Lot of alcohol was involved. As was making an ass of one's self as a result! On an aside, was gifted a beautiful book called 'The Martini' by Barnaby Conrad 111. From the book:
" The word Martini is a nostalgic passport to another era- when automobiles had curves like Mae West, when women were either ladies or dames, when men wore hats, when a deal was done on a handshake, when boxing and polo were regular passtimes, when we lived for movies instead of MTV, and when jazz was going from hot to cool. It was a time when a relationship was called either a romance or an affair, when love over a pitcher of Martinis was bigger than both of us, sweetheart, and it wouldn't matter if the Russians dropped the bomb as long as the gin was wet and the vermouth was dry. That was the Martini Culture. "
Sigh. It almost take you elsewhere doesn't it? Reminds me of Cary Grant in An Affair To Remember, of those discreet New York speakeasies, of Ernest Hemingway and Marlene Dietrich, of Joan Crawford in Humoresque, of 'Nora' and 'Nick' in The Thin Man, of Bette Davis in All About Eve, of Frank Sinatra and those smokey jazz clubs, of The Stork Club in Manhattan in the 1940s...it does take you else where.

Another Drinking Game: Another Lazy Rhyme

A Martini does a lot for the soul
Its bliss in a bowl
Full of the mellow and the tart which sharpens the wit
Gives the soul that transcendental lift
Dirty or dry, its unlike any other high
Welcome is the accompanying blissed out sigh
A wedge of lime, an olive or two
Vodka and Gin, a choice of two
Am a purist, its Gin for me
Add an olive, make it dirty, its then perfect, you see?
My ode to a Martini doesn't quite ever end
End unknown, but beginning is always with a glass heaven sent.
Whimsical, soulful, irony in a glass
I leave you to enjoy another weekend, with a drink in its own class.
A Martini I may crave and glorify, it does much for the soul
But a favorite is Rum and Coke, enough to get one on a roll
That will be our little secret, my fellow sinners
Remember, a full bar, and a drink that works are the real winners!

Armed With A Latte!
Alright my lovelies, am back. Its been a while, and you wonder where I've been? (OK, I know atleast one of you has to wonder) Let me tell you exactly whats been happening, or rather the not happening part. My MacBook crashed. Again. Third time, in the one year that I've owned it! And no, its not my fault. It is exasperating, I have half a mind to shift back to windows. Its a good thing that the yet un-mentioned other part of the brain, has a mind of its own. Ha!
So anyway, there I was minding my own business one day (no, it never ends), when Chamiya calls to tell me that thanks to USCIS, she and her beau tied the knot! Between the shock, joy and planning a delayed bachelorette party it sank into all of us (the married women), that she (Chamiya) got married. See, you have to understand that even though in a relationship, she was still the unmarried one, hence among us, our superhero! So anyhoo, her coming over to the dark side called for a celebration of course. With dark rum. And lots of it. Chamiya and her beau make a great couple, so that called for more drinking. Toasting to them, obviously. We are quite selfless that way.
Oh, what fun it was.
What is not fun, is my continuing obsession with Bottega Veneta. And being friends with Chamiya doesn't help, both of us are such label whores. We both bought Gucci bags recently and swore off buying another bag, this year. But then we spot the most divine Bottega tote and now can't stop obsessing about it day and night. Am almost scared to see her online, coz all we do is swap links. Of what else, but bags. Superficial and shallow we are not. OK, a bit. But whats a girl gotta do? So now am planning to put two of my babies on Ebay (yes, am one dysfunctional step away from naming them), just to fund my newbie. The husband of course worries that one of these days, he might end up on Ebay, if a craving for a Birkin hits me. He does have a high opinion of himself! :-)
Speaking of high, weekend is here! WooHoo! Am so looking forward to it. Though you should know that I am scared to make any plans. Since my husband sat through Harry Potter for me, he thinks I owe him all of my Nine (Social) Lives. But a weekend is weekend, and always fun.
Until later my lovelies, its Latte Files.

The Balcony
The Balcony outside of my grandmother’s room, in Hyderabad, is a Technicolor swatch card with wild bursts of hue that you really have to see to believe. The colors so vibrant in the blistering summer sun: bright, happy and scorching.
All you had to do was step back into the room to escape the summer heat but then, just to reassure ourselves, we’d peek just one more of those ‘last looks’ to see, if all was still as should be.
It is a packed balcony of shocking shades. The red of the chillies, the green of Tulsi, the scraggly rose and the yellow-green of a creeper. The walls are pink; the tile, a mosaic. There is even an orange stool. And all this, in a small balcony of a high rise.
The Balcony wouldn’t be complete without my grandfather always sitting in a corner with his newspaper, under a shade, and my grandmother, reading, writing, sorting through grains or just plain keeping an eye out for the comings and goings of the building people.
As the morning sun hit it, it was warm and promising. In the noon, unforgiving. And in the evening shade, mellow and secretive. It was at that time of the day that the plants were watered..and the smell…oh the smell…you know, that rain smell as water hits the hot soil. That smell was there every evening, wafting into the room and then into the house.. It was summer..
I found pictures of The Balcony on my phone today, forgetting I ever even had them. And in this moment of nostalgia..feeling homesick to the bone.. how I wish for that little piece of summer…

Drinking Games: In Lazy Rhyme
The weekend was a blissed out date
Blessed by a hue of pink in a Martini so hale
Usually one for green apples, a melon in a Martini was a change
Nothing though to beat the tart of a Martini perfect made.
In between the days of haze, why forget the friend of late
In weather so hot, humid, none but wine white makes a better date
Yeah, I had a weekend oh so fun
So pardon the nonsensical rhyme and the nonexistent pun.
Yes, I have been called a ‘masochist’ already once today
For rubbing my holiday hands in glee
For that too I have an answer, I blame it on the trip to SoHo
On a glass of Argentinean Mendoza, two or three.
You wonder, why the rhyme, of a weekend gone and of Friday yet to come
Blame the Cheetos and beer, which was lunch today, a holiday rightly done.

Such A Long Journey
Such a long journey. And how.
Three and a half hour flight to San Francisco. Two hours of layover time. Then ten hours to Tokyo. And then another layover of two hours. From there, onto Hong Kong.
Why doesn’t just clicking heels work? I’ll even wear those gory, drag queen, ruby red slippers.
And while am jet lagged and (just a little) dazed, I realize that the blog recently turned one.
How time flies. Now if only that extended to actual flying time as well.

Work In Progress
I started these two abstract paintings eons ago, and clearly, as you can see, they lie unfinished.
Am of course waiting for inspiration to strike. (Talent would help too.)
But the real culprit is a vice well known to me, ‘Procrastination’.

"How boring the art world would be if we faithfully painted only what we see."
- Curtis Verdun

“My evil genius Procrastination has whispered me to tarry 'til a more convenient season.”

Why
Precisely the least, the softest, lightest, a lizard's rustling, a breath, a flash, a moment, a little makes the way of the best happiness.
- Frederich Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra
Its funny how, “Little”, needs so much damn effort!

Bumps and Curves. And damn those winding ones.
Why can’t it be straight? And simple?

Etc.
If I haven’t already said this before, let me state it again, I can’t hold a tune to save my life. No high note, no low note can make up for my lack of any note! And that is the truth. So anyway, skill notwithstanding, I still do love to sing. Especially after a couple of drinks down. I am just waiting to be asked. And I do. And then I sing, after being coy for like two seconds. And the next day of course, am mortified and solemnly swear to never again.
Best laid plans..
Which reminds me of course of the time when I used to work in the radio. I had this show where we’d take requests, but after a while, the “quality” of requests we’d get would just be downright dismaying. Seriously, there’s just that many times that you can play Bolton, Adams or Boys!! So we’d start making up our own requests! I had at least one every show under the guise of an email from ‘this’ person requesting ‘this’ song and play the whatever damn I wanted to then! It was all done with an aim to better educate! Things I got away with…
And then there have been some I wish I got away with, but I didn’t. And how!!
Years ago, I think it was the twelfth grade when my friend and I got offered to ‘star’ in a music video. A Tamil music video at that! I knew my parents would never agree but I really wanted to do it, just for kicks! To say I did do something like that once, to strike it off the list! The wardrobe changes, the guy who comes in and spritzes water on your face before shoots, just plain brilliant!
So I decided to go ahead and do it, without telling them. And I figured since I don’t come from a Tamil family, why on earth will they be watching a Tamil channel where they would suddenly see their daughter flash by! So, I could get away with it! Right? The arrogance of youth!
But as my luck would have it, I did get found out!! And man, the storm I found myself in!
Would I do it again? Knowing me, probably yes! Just to see every cliché coming true was priceless!! But I’d probably go about it in a better way for sure!
(Walking into Landmark and seeing that cd on sale was just too much fun to pass up! But it’s a still a sore topic which we don’t talk about, at my house.)
Such craziness!
Speaking of crazy…
“You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more?

Just!!
It rained all day today, and incessantly at that. I wished I was back in India so that endless cups of steaming chai and spicy eats could just keep materializing in front of me. Instead, I just spent all of my time wondering how wonderful it’d be just to have the Barefoot Contessa as a friend!
On ‘aside’ news, the fashionista in me is a tad pleased today coz I just acquired a Gucci bag, courtesy, an indulgent husband! (Woohoo!) My epitaph would probably read,’Here rests a bag lady’. I have already spotted a Chloe, which am hoping to score over a birthday!
Ok, so am a bag-hag, sue me!
On another ‘aside’, this weekend am hoping to catch two exhibits, one of Matisse and another of Balenciaga. Sculpture and Couture. Just the kind of design therapy the doctor ordered!
The final ‘aside’: My friend named his two dogs, ‘Gin’ and ‘Tonic’. While am all for their names, it’s not exactly conducive to calling your dogs out aloud. Nope. (We know.. we practiced all pitches..)
I have never been a ‘Gin And Tonic’ drinker. The only time I favor Gin is when it comes in a martini. But inspired by the recent nomenclature, I decided to give it a whirl. Throw in a piece of lime, its actually pretty decent. Anyway, like this friend says,”Am against alcohol abuse. I’ll drink anything, but no wasting alcohol!”
(Hic)
Before I scream, ‘Over and out’, let me leave you with this as I sit reading ‘Infidel’ by Ayaan Hirsi Ali...

Quarter Life Crisis, Yes, Really…
Quarter of a century old. Two and a half decades old. Not old enough to have a mid-life crisis yet. Old enough to have a quarter-life one. Yippie for me, for falling into the marketing induced, some true, some hyped, pop-cultural demographic of quarter-life-crisis-suffering-people!Woo hoo!
While I sip on some birthday champagne (hic!), I decided to go visit the ghosts from the past ( alcohol has a way of doing that to you, combine that with chocolate, you might just sneak a peek into the future!) and see what worked, what didn’t, what I’d do all over again and what I would change. While it sounded great in theory, it’s a tad depressing to actually do, when I should really be out there dancing my stilettos off! ( OK, so stilettos are scary..but I should at least give my pedicured toes a work out, no?)
Getting on with my reminiscing and introspection I realised quite a few things actually..(ahem, once again, it’s the alcohol!) I placed way too much value on certain friends which I never should have. The closest friends I continue to have today, are really the best! I probably should have never gone out on that date, with ‘that’ guy. I should have never broken another’s heart the way I did, and I wish I never got mine broken. I miss those days of school girl crushes, pointless dating sprees and every relationship being the epitome of “the one”. But am also glad those days have passed, coz’ I know, I no longer have the energy, patience or the threshold to endure crap quotient as I once did. All that, and also I found my ‘one’. And got married to him! ( drugs, blindfolds, blackmail were involved)
Opinions I once had, seem defunct and the advice I heeded, too premature. I find myself growing more opinionated (right or wrong) and more often than not find myself at the giving end of advice spectrum!( OK, I know am 25, not 75, but indulge me here) My ability to sift through good advice from bad has gotten considerably worse, the damn opinions of mine get in the way. I find that some of the things that parents go on about actually do make sense! Go figure!(Dad, if you are tempted to do a cartwheel after reading this..umm..DON’T)
I miss the conformity of school/college and the familiarity of friends and those other people and faces I have grown to recognize. It was something I knew and boundaries am familiar with. The future seems intimidating. Will I fit in? Find my own clique? Maybe I already have, maybe it takes some more time. But it excites me too. Possibilities are endless. The contradiction in everything scares me. Am sick of the same old. And am ready for the ‘new’. I find comfort in the ‘old’. The ‘new’ fills me with trepidation. And hence, the ‘Contradiction’!
Prorities also seem to have shifted. Somewhat. That’s a list that am still working on.. I can never quite figure out what order feels right. But I know now, ‘I’ need to be on the list. Its not about being arrogant or proud but about having pride and self-esteem. I have grown to learn the difference. And appreciate the latter. There also seems to be so much pressure to do that something extra! Geez, when you look at barely teens teeming with millions, makes me almost head out looking for an agent. (‘Almost’ being the operative word here.)
Suddenly, loans, investments, future and careers are important. What happened to good old planning as far ahead as Saturday night and the biggest question was what to wear and where to go partying? (Now am just exaggerating!) (Can you imagine the post I’d be writing when I turn 30?) (Oh wait, will I still be blogging at 30?)
Am done being the college kid. Seriously, I am. But am not ready to be a “Grown-up” yet! Ah, the quarter life crisis! (Pause for effect) (Ever the Drama Queen)
One of my favorite quotes from Alice In Wonderland sums it all up for me, “ If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
Do you see??
